Many people know AOL for its social media focus - it’s homepage with personalized links and collection of materials in areas such as lifestyle, travel, networks, world news, entertainment news, and financial news, weather, and hot searches. But it also offers a suite of web products that are free, among which are its free webmail. To learn more about AOL’s email offerings, read on.

AOL Mail is sometimes called AIM mail, a reference to AOL Instant Messenger. AOL is usually ranked among the top five Internet portals, along with MySpace, MSN, Yahoo! and Lycos. And it is also considered one of the top web-based email services, although in that venue, its top competitors are considered to be GMail, Windows Live Hotmail (formerly Hotmail), and Yahoo! Mail.

The features of free AOL Mail include unlimited mail storage and the ability to send attachments up to 16 MB. It offers both spam and virus protection and a spell checker. Ties between AOL Mail and AOL Instant Messenger include the AIM Panel, complete with buddy list. But one of the most sought-after features is likely to be the unsend capability, available for messages sent to other AOL and/or AIM mailbox.

AOL Mail allows users to interact with their POP3 and IMAP programs as well. This means that you can send and read mail with accounts such as Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook, and Mozilla Thunderbird. Also, through the newly launched Tunome, AOL is offering customized domain names. However,  you should also be aware that advertising is shown to users while they are using the AOL Mail account.
